Legend 1

It is believed that; once there was a war in between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. Lord Shiva hence decided to intervene and put an end to it. He took the form of a huge fire (Agni) whist standing between them. He challenged the 2 Gods that the first God to find the origin of the fire is the winner. In order to conclude his win, Lord Vishnu is believed to have taken the form of a Bear and he tried to find the fire starting from the bottom of the earth. But as claimed by him, Lord Vishnu could not find it and he failed. Similarly, Lord Brahma took the form of a swan and decided to find the origin from the top of the fire.

Even Lord Brahma failed to find the origin of the fire. So, accepting the defeat they both decided to stop the fight between them. Lord Shiva is believed to have taken the shape of a mountain and rested there. Legends say that the mountain is the one at Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu.

Legend 2

Another Legends describes that Lord Muruga was born out of Lord Shiva’s third eye as six individual sparks. The power generated by the sparks were huge that they had to put the sparks into lake Saravana. The 6 individual sparks took the shape of 6 babies. The babies were then raised by 6 Krithika sisters. Thus, the name Karthikeyan. On this day, the Parvathy came to the lake and made all 6 babies into one. Thus, Lord Muruga has 6 faces. Therefore, the day the babies got united into one is believed to be one of the legends behind celebrating Karthigai Deepam. Hence, the answer to the question of Why karthigai Deepam is celebrated.
